Subject: Expanded Recall Notification Report, # 004-2003, Misbranding and Undeclraed Allergen EXPANDED RECALL NOTIFICATION REPORT U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE FOOD SAFETY AND INSPECTION SERVICE

PRODUCTS RECALLED: el Rio, SOUTHWESTERN STYLE, CHILI CON CARNE PRODUCTION DATES/IDENTIFYING CODES: The products subject to the expanded recall of March 06, 2003 are:

* 15-ounce cans of "el Rio, SOUTHWESTERN STYLE, ALL NATURAL, CHILI CON CARNE, NO BEANS." The products were produced on various days between Dec. 7, 2000 and April 19, 2002.
* 15-ounce cans of "el Rio, SOUTHWESTERN STYLE, ALL NATURAL, CHILI CON CARNE, WITH BEANS." The products were produced on various days between Sept. 28, 2000 and Sept. 16, 2002.

Each product bears the establishment number "EST. 13172" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

On Feb. 4, 2003, the company recalled approximately 1,060 pounds of canned Chili con Carne that were produced January 30, 2002. The products previously recalled were 15-ounce cans of "el Rio, SOUTHWESTERN STYLE, CHILI CON CARNE, NO BEANS." Each product bears the establishment number "EST.13172" inside the USDA mark of inspection. .

PROBLEM/REASON FOR RECALL: The products are being recalled because they were misbranded. The product contains undeclared ingredients and an undeclared allergen (oats).

HOW/WHEN DISCOVERED: On January 28, 2003, a consumer complaint was received by FSIS and was followed up by FSIS investigation on January 30, 2003. The firm was notified of the misbranding problem and initiated the voluntary recall.

QUANTITY RECALLED: Approximately 105,000 pounds (including the 1,060 pounds recalled on 02/04/2003)

DISTRIBUTION: The products were distributed to retail stores in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
