Dear Friend of Massachusetts Agriculture

This annual report summarizes the activities of Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. for the calendar year January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006 and highlights events of interest for the coming year. MAC has finished another exciting and eventful year and we are pleased to share it with you.

I would first like to thank all of the donors and in-kind contributors to Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom for their generosity this year. As I look over the list of donors, I see that many of you are so faithful in supporting this important organization year-after-year. I wish I could thank each one of you personally, but that isn’t possible, so I'm sending to you my heartfelt thanks through this letter. To acknowledge those of you who contributed in both 2005 and 2006, an asterisk has been added following the name of the donors in the report list.

The Executive Committee met regularly, as did the full board to develop and execute the goals of the organization. It would be hard to find a more dedicated group of individuals on any board. They have donated much time and energy to drive long distances and spent long hours planning and implementing the many events during the year that supported the education of our teachers and students in Massachusetts. These individuals represent every aspect of agriculture and education in our Commonwealth and are dedicated to keeping the role and importance of agriculture in our curriculum.

Our 2006 Annual Growing Minds Conference for educators was a great success with four workshops filled with classroom ideas and activities running concurrently throughout the day. For the first time we held this annual conference in a school and workshops were taught by teachers who are actively incorporating agriculture in the classroom curriculum. The Conference was so popular that several teachers told us it was “the best they had ever attended” “filled with great ideas and enthusiasm for agriculture.” We decided to use the same format and location for the 2007 Annual Conference.

This Summer Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom held our first Graduate Credit Course for educators and it was very popular. We closed enrollment at twenty-one registrants. Fitchburg State College provided three graduate credits to each educator and workshops were held on farms across the state. Each registrant attended seven workshops and enjoyed the chance to immerse themselves in Mass. agriculture while preparing lessons to take back to the classroom. The teachers made a special point of telling us what they had learned was going to help them in the fall.

In March, the Board of Directors held a gala to honor Frederic Winthrop who brought together a group of interested farmers and educators to found Mass. Agriculture in the Classroom in 1982. At the dinner and awards ceremony that followed, Mr. Winthrop was celebrated for his many contributions to agriculture in Massachusetts and was presented with MAC’s first Founder’s Award in front of friends, farmers and members of our organization.

After three years as President of the Board of Directors, I am stepping aside to let others take on that role. My experience as President has shown me that a more permanent source of funding is needed to help this important organization thrive. It is difficult to go to zero funding every year and have to raise all of our operating costs. I am continuing to lead the effort to re-establish a line item in the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture budget funded through the state legislature.

We urge our supporters to contact people that they know in their various districts across the Commonwealth that could help restore the funding and add some monies to our line item that we can carry out our mission. We have dedicated teachers and administrators serving on our board who are ready and willing to implement a wider scope of the program that we started this last summer. It will take some effort on our part to implement this task but we feel that this type of education for our students is important for the future of the State of Massachusetts.

James I. Munger, President
Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom

Welcome New and Thanks to Out-Going Members

James Munger has served as President of Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom for the past three years and was Vice President and Chairman of the Mini- Grant Committee before that. In fact, the idea for the Mini-Grant program originated with Jim in 1994 when he first joined the Board of Directors. Jim has also been a strong proponent of our technology workshops and initiatives that assist teachers in improving their math and science skills. He will continue to be an active member of the Board of Directors and will spend his efforts on securing a permanent funding source for the organization. We also look forward to more of the heirloom tomatoes that he grows each year as a fund-raiser for MAC.

Jerry Myers, who has served as our Co-Vice President for several years will leaving the Board of Directors this year. Jerry has been an active member of our Development and Fund-raising efforts and has given us guidance on our programs at the Big E. He left his position at Eastern States this summer and is pursuing new arenas. We wish him every success.

Janice Wentworth, who chaired our Calendar Committee, conducted several workshops for educators and initiated our Heirloom tomato fund-raisers also left the Board of Directors in 2006. We will miss her enthusiasm and many good ideas. Susan Gentile, from the USDA, Food and Nutrition Service in Boston stepped down in 2006 and was replaced by her colleague Mary Gioiosa who now covers Massachusetts for the agency. Both have taken active roles in supporting our Annual Conference and Farm Bureau Raffle.

Marjorie Cooper, a founding member of Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom has been the Secretary for more than a dozen years. Over the years, she has also been President, curriculum reviewer, workshop educator and our most stalwart supporter. Several years ago Marjorie joined efforts with Ed Bourgeois to organize and run the Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom booth and the associated Mass. Lottery booth at the Eastern States Exposition. Together they have been an exceptionally efficient and effective pair. We are pleased to report that Marjorie and Ed have agreed to serve as Co-Presidents of Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom. Ken Oles, beekeeper and former teacher will replace Marjorie Cooper as Secretary of the organization.

Program Overview

Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom (MAC) operates under the guidance of a 30-member volunteer Board of Directors who represent Massachusetts’ agricultural commodities, associations, and state and Federal Agencies involved in agriculture education and awareness. Programs include:

Mini-Grant Program

The Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom Mini-Grant program is now in it’s thirteenth year. The Mini-Grant Committee awarded $5,247 in 2006, to support eight worthy initiatives submitted by Massachusetts educators. Since 1994, MAC has awarded more than $165,000 to more than 200 projects planned and carried out by educators across the State of Massachusetts. Grants of up to $1,500 per projects are awarded three times a year. Deadlines are April 1, September 1 and November 1. A MAC Board member serves as a liaison to support each project.

Workshops for Teachers on the Farm

In 2006, MAC conducted eight workshops for educators on farms across the state. Ten professional development points were offered for each of the workshops, reaching over 110 educators. Each session offered a farm tour and the opportunity to meet the farmer and learn about the work that goes on at that farm. Related hands-on activities conducted on the farm helped bring agriculture back to the classroom.

The 2006 topics included: Botany and Nursery; Community Farming; Early American Farm Activities; Farm Field Trip Education; Hunger; Insects and Pollination; Maple Sugaring, Orchards; School Gardening and Sustainable Agriculture. MAC has offered 90 workshops on the farm for educators since 1996, bringing on-farm education experiences to more than 1,100 educators.

Growing Minds Conference

In February 2006, Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom held our Fifth Annual Winter Conference titled “Growing Minds Through Massachusetts Agriculture” at a new location, The Paul R. Baird Middle School in Ludlow. Each workshops was presented by a teacher or farm educator or a teacher working in conjunction with a farmer, and offered a number of hands-on activities for the classroom. During each of the four workshop sessions, participants chose one of four sessions on a variety of agricultural topics. Kent Lage from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources offered an inspirational keynote talk about the history of agriculture in Massachusetts. Randall’s Farm in Ludlow provided a farm-made feast. During the year, the Board of Directors planned the 2007 Conference, once again pairing classroom educators with farmers for hands-on workshop that link to the Mass. Curriculum Frameworks.

Educational Newsletters

The MAC newsletter is published three times a year. Each newsletter focuses on one aspect of the organization and also provides in-depth background materials and activities for one agricultural commodity or issue. Feature articles in our 2006 newsletters described our Summer Graduate Credit Course for educators, paid tribute to Frederic Winthrop who founded Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom in 1982 and honored our 2006 Teacher of the Year, Regina Adams. Additional articles described our mini-grant program, the Massachusetts Agriculture Calendar, the Massachusetts Farm to School Program and our Heirloom Tomato efforts. Featured Massachusetts agricultural topics included: Goats; Seeds and Animals in the Classroom. We currently print 10,800 copies for distribution and also send the newsletter by e-mail.

Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom Web Site

Visit the MAC Web Site at www.aginclassroom.org to find an ever expanding site including information on workshops and conferences; educational information from past newsletters; mini-grant guide-lines and recipients; a regional AITC page, and many links.

Massachusetts Agriculture Calendar

MAC collaborated with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to produce the 2007 Calendar of Massachusetts Agriculture. The calendar is a tool to educate teachers, legislators and the general public, while at the same time creating an attractive color calendar to offer a daily reminder of Massachusetts agriculture. A calendar was sent to every public library in the state as well as each legislator.

Graduate-Credit Course for Teachers

In 2006, Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom launched our Summer Graduate-credit course “Growing Agriculture in the Classroom” in conjunction with Fitchburg State College. Twenty-one teachers participated in the program, attending seven educational workshops on farms across the state. Each participant also kept a journal and completed an agricultural project which they presented at the final workshop session on August 15th. This project was funded by a grant from the Northeast Farm Credit Ag-Enhancement Program and Agway Foundation. The Committee is planning a follow up Graduate-course this summer.

Other Education Materials

Massachusetts Agricultuire in the Classroom's Farm Field Trip Manual was developed to assist Massachusetts farmers who want to offer field trips on the farm for school groups. It included an outline on how to develop or expand the farm education program, pre-activities and post-field trip activities for the classroom, suggestions for carrying out the field trip and connections to the Mass. Curriculum Frameworks. It was funded by an Agro-Environmental Technology grant from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources.

The School Community - Green Industry Handbook provides resources to facilitate cooperative gardening efforts between schools, local community groups and businesses. This handbook was reformatted and reprinted in 2004. This handbook was developed by Diane Syverson as part of a Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources & Federal Specialty Crops Grant Program.

Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom continues to distribute our “Eight Lesson About Agriculture and the Environment” (a resource with sample activities for elementary and middle school teachers with sample); “Reprints of Ten Past Newsletters”; an “It’s Your World” curriculum for grades K through 12 and our Teacher’s Resource Directory of free and low cost agricultural education materials Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom
