The IPM Education and Certification project seeks to promote an understanding of IPM principles by growers and IPM professionals and promotes an understanding of IPM concepts by the general public. We move toward this objective in through a number of activities.

PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
The development of IPM guidelines for agricultural crops and for structural pests has provided professionals with a detailed explanation of the scope of IPM and a tool for self-assessment of their IPM programs.

  • IPM certification programs provide additional educational opportunities for professionals. The Partners with Nature program, the first state-sponsored IPM certification program in the country, provided growers with IPM incentives and education from 1993 to 1999.
  • The New England Pest Management Association is currently developing training and certification of IPM practitioners and businesses through its IPM Registry.

CONSUMER EDUCATION
Finding the educational moment of the consumer is a challenge. Some consumers seek information while others do not. This program seeks a multi-pronged approach to education. Activities include:

  • Printed materials such as brochures and booklets are produced and distributed. Currently a booklet explaining IPM in 8 languages is under development.
  • Posters are distributed for use in educational and marketing settings
  • Presentations on IPM are given to the public and to educational groups such as Master Gardeners

OTHER ACTIVITIES
As State Pest Survey Coordinator, I collaborate with USDA and state agencies
on surveys for potential exotic pest introductions into the State. Survey results are compilied by the National Agricultural Pest Information System (NAPIS). Recent surveys in Massachusetts have been conducted for exotic bark beetles and borers, pear thrips, potato nematodes, purple loosestrife, chrysanthemum white rust, leek moth and plum pox.

In the year 2002, I am involved in a number of loosely related activities, including assessment of food handling practices on the farm, assessing the status of pollination in Massachusetts and working with the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) in developing a tool to assess the interactions of pesticides and ground- and surface-water.
