Specialty: Team leader for IPM Program.
Profile:
A veteran of over 22 years employment with UMass Extension, Bill
is the overall coordinator of the Massachusetts Extension Integrated
Pest Management Program. In addition to having over 20 years experience
in the field of IPM, Bill holds a B.S. degree from Holy Cross College,
an M.S. degree in Plant Science from UMass, and is working on completing
a Ph.D., also in Plant Science. He is academically affiliated with
the Department of Entomology at UMass, Amherst, where he is an adjunct
lecturer
Over
his career, he has published numerous papers and given many talks
on IPM-related research and education, regionally, nationally, and
internationally. His major research interests are in the behavioral
ecology of arthropod pests and their natural enemies, and in developing
effective monitoring devices. His current research program is focused
on better understanding the role of, and potentially using, naturally-occurring
plant defensive compounds against key apple pests. An additional
major interest is in the development of eco labels,
a means for farmers to be recognized in the marketplace for use
of environmentally sustainable farming practices
In
addition to his IPM-related work, Bill is co-owner and operator
with his wife Norma of a 140 acre diversified farm in the Berkshire
hills of western Massachusetts - Blue
Heron Farm. In addition to their main crop of N.O.F.A. Certified
Organic maple syrup, the Colis raise both Nubian and Alpine
Dairy goats and purebred Norwegian Fjord horses, produce hay on
50 acres, and highbush blueberries on about 0.5 acre. In an effort
to maximize potential returns to the farm, the Colis handle
all of the packaging and distribution of their blueberries and maple
syrup direct to consumers and local retail outlets. For the last
10 years, they also have offered farm vacation rentals through 3
small housekeeping units located right on the farm.

of caterpillar pests of sweet corn and the TOM-CAST disease forecasting
system for early blight in tomato. Currently she is involved with
studies on biointensive insect management in brassicas, cucurbits,
and sweet corn. She edits the Vegetable Pest Message, which is produced

Specialty: Integrated pest management education and certification.
Profile:
Craig Hollingsworth developed a program to certify Massachusetts farmers
who use IPM. The program, called Partners
with Nature, was the first state- sponsored IPM-certification
program in the nation. Crops certified in the program included: sweet
corn, tomato (both field-grown and greenhouse-grown), potato, cole
crops, pepper, pumpkin, winter squash, strawberry and blueberry. Between
1993 and 1997, over 100 growers had participated in the program. The
program was also supported a number of research projects which explore
the problems associated with the marketing of environmentally-grown
produce.
Since
1995, Craig has been working with the UMass Extension Vegetable
Team in developing and implementing an IPM program for winter squash
and pumpkin. As State Survey Coordinator, he collaboratse with USDA
and state agencies on surveys for potential exotic pest introductions
into the State. Survey results are compilied by the National
Agricultural Pest Information System(NAPIS). Recently, he have
helped to conduct surveys for exotic bark beetles, pear thrips,
potato nematodes and purple loosestrife.
