An Evening on Cut Flowers Program, Directions and Registration Form

Andrew's Greenhouse, Southeast St., Amherst, MA

Jacqui and Andy Cowle are celebrating 25 years in business this year. Their business is a first generation greenhouse and cut flower business located on a picturesque 150 acre farm in south Amherst. Andrew's has a reputation of selling quality spring plants, specializing in unusual annuals and perennials for retail sale. In addition to 20,000 square feet of greenhouses, Andrew's has cut-your-own perennial and annual flower gardens.

Program Summary

Tour of Cut Flower Gardens

Doug Cox will present information on fertilizing cut flowers and Paul Lopes and Tina Smith will review pest management practices for cut flowers.

Light Dinner

Demonstration: Harvesting and Handling Field-grown Cut Flowers
Harvesting flowers at just the right stage of development is important for their longevity. Susan Han will present information on the best stage of development to harvest fresh garden flowers, and how to handle and treat them to add days to their keeping quality.

Presenters
Dr. Douglas Cox
Floriculture Faculty, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, University of Massachusetts.
Doug's research specialties are nutrition and soils for floriculture crops. He teaches courses in soil fertility, plant nutrition, floriculture crops and perennials.

Paul Lopes
Extension Floriculture Specialist at the University of Massachusetts, Cranberry Station, East Wareham.

Tina Smith
Extension Floriculture Specialist at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Paul and Tina provide educational activities to the floriculture industry through newsletters, training programs and the Extension Floriculture website.

Dr. Susan Han
Floriculture Faculty, Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, University of Massachusetts.

Susan's specialty is post harvest handling of plants and cut flowers. She has presented information on post harvest handling of cut flowers at the New England Greenhouse Conference and Specialty Cut Flower Conference and has had numerous articles published in grower trade magazines on the subject.


DIRECTIONS TO ANDREW'S GREENHOUSE

To Andrew's from the East via Route 2

" Via Route 2 West to exit 16 (Belchertown/Amherst). From Route 2 take Route 202 South for about 15 miles to a blinking yellow light at Amherst Road. (You will see signs "to Rt 9 and Rt 116"). Turn right and follow Amherst Road (becomes Pelham Road after about 4 miles) for 6 miles to Amherst center. Take left on South East St. Go straight across Rte 9 continuing onto South East St for two miles. Just past the South Amherst common (library and church on left) Andrew's is on the left.

To Andrew's from the East or West via I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike)

" Exit 8 (Palmer). Follow Route 32 South to Palmer, take Route 20 West to Route 181 North into Belchertown, and then Route 9 West to Amherst. Take left onto South East St. for two miles. Just past the South Amherst common (library and church on left), Andrew's will be on the left

" Exit 7 (Ludlow). Follow Route 21 North to U.S. 202 North to Route 9 West to Amherst center. Take left onto South East St. for two miles. Just past the South Amherst common (library and church on left) Andrew's will be on the left.

" Exit 5 (Chicopee). Follow Route 33 North to Route 116 North to Amherst center. Turn right onto Pomeroy Lane. Go 1 mi. to stop sign. Go straight through stop sign and follow bend onto South East St. Andrew's will be on the left.

" Exit 4 (W. Springfield). Follow I-91 North to exit 19 (Northampton). From the exit ramp, turn right onto Route 9 and go approximately 6 miles to Route 116 South (right turn at the lights) Take left onto Pomeroy Lane. Go 1 mi. to stop sign. Go straight through stop sign and follow bend onto South East St. Andrew's will be on the left.
