French Hall

Built: 1907-1908
Architect: William Ritchie

French Hall was erected particularly for instruction in floriculture and market gardening. It's greenhouses connected in the back of the building allow for practical experimentation and research in these subjects. During World War I it became a barracks for the student Army Training Corps. The hall is named for Henry Flagg French, first president of the institution (1864-66) and father of the famous sculptor, Daniel Chester French. French's early training was as a lawyer, but his hobby was progressive agriculture.
