This report is submitted to the Massachusetts State Legislature on behalf of the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the UMass Extension Board of Public Overseers.

UMass Extension addresses public concerns of high priority for the Commonwealth. Part of the national Cooperative Extension System, it sponsors statewide programs in Agroecology, Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, 4-H Youth and Family Development, and Nutrition Education. These four programs, often in partnerships with other organizations, offer research and educational opportunities including workshops, conferences, distance education, training events, consultations, and applied research.

UMass Extension is one of the University of Massachusetts Amherst's leading outreach programs, making more than $9 million in knowledge-based public resources available to citizens of the Commonwealth. UMass Extension directly serves over 30,000 adults and more than 60,000 youth each year. In addition, thousands of citizens attend conferences, subscribe to newsletters, purchase educational publications, or access the UMass Extension Web page for information critical to their lives and livelihoods.

The Mission and Values of UMass Extension

Our mission is to serve the public good through the creation, communication, and application of knowledge. Extension is founded upon a partnership of researchers and educators who facilitate the development and communication of knowledge, working with citizens who apply the knowledge and help identify critical issues.

The values of UMass Extension are:

  • deep respect for people, families, and communities
  • commitment to the development of the full potential of youth
  • dedication to stewardship of the environment
  • commitment to high quality education and research
  • respect for both experimental and experiential knowledge
  • respect for diversity of people, ideas, and organizations
  • commitment to the efficient use of public resources
  • dedication to active citizen involvement in programs

"Whether an effort involves research or
outreach or both, it is clear that the vision for
the 21st century rests on a truly participatory model."
