EMULATION AND REPETITION IN 19TH CENTURY ART

Vanessa Bell was inspired by Paul Cezanne, a Post-Impressionist. In her painting, she paid homage to Monet's grainstacks series, but didn't emulate, or imitate his way of painting. The colors are not vibrant like his paintings, nor do they show any play on light. She focused on painting like Cezanne, which is all about structure and geometry, hence why everything about the painting is very abstract. The colors are flat, with no sense of depth in the image. Unlike Monet or Millet (and the Barbizon artists), Bell didn't paint what she saw as in the Barbizon tradition, despite painting from life.
