Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy Laboratory

The High-Field NMR Facility at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is an interdepartmental facility, open to researchers of the Five Colleges Consortium (UMass Amherst, Smith, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst and Hampshire Colleges) and surrounding industries. It supports research programs of twenty groups in the areas of chemical synthesis, polymer chemistry, materials science, and natural products.

Nanoimprint Lithography Laboratory

Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is a new way of nanopatterning and a revolutionary solution to nanomanufacturing. NIL patterns nanostructures by the physical deformation of a deformable material using a mold. NIL can have sub-5 nm resolution and 1% CD control, and simultaneously achieve high-throughput, sub-10 nm structures and low cost -- a feat currently impossible using other existing lithographic methods.

The Nanonex NX-2000 is a single wafer nanoimprinter for all forms of imprint (e.g. thermal, photo-curable, and embossing) without alignment. The tool offers excellent uniformity regardless of the roughness of the backside of the substrate and mold, minimum relative lateral shift between the wafer and mold, very small thermal mass and hence rapid heating and cooling time.

The Hysitron Triboindenter system is a state of the art Nanomechanical Test system purchased very recently with the support of NSF-IGERT and the NSF Center for Hierarchical Manufacturing.

Food Biophysics and Nanotechnology Laboratory

Capabilities of the Food Bionphysics and Nanotechnology (FBNL) include the formation and preparation of nanoparticles and nanofibers from food biopolymers using techniques such as electrospinning and ultrafiltration. The FBNL develops nanoscalar encapsulation systems, delivery mechanisms for bioactives and antimicrobials. Other areas of research interest include biofilm remediation, surfactant and detergents in foods, high-intensity ultrasonication. Off-campus clients may access FBNL instrumentation and expertise by arrangemeent with the Lab director.
