Jean Hosmer
A plaque commemorating the death of UMass staff member JEAN HOSMER at the hands of her estranged husband a year ago was installed this winter on the sidewalk on Center Street in Northampton, the site of the killing. The mother of two teen-agers was in the process of divorcing her husband, William Bernotas, and had renewed a restraining order against him just before the shooting. The long-time graphic designer for UMass Extension has also been honored by her colleagues with a garden near their workplace in Draper Hall; her parents, CATHERINE ’78G and John Hosmer commemorated their daughter’s death in a special way too. A bronze sculpture by John Hosmer – a mother holding a child – now sits near his daughter’s grave in Wildwood Cemetery.
