Thermal imaging camera

The images are spooky, but they help save lives. When blinding smoke fills a blazing building, firefighters face mortal danger. Now, thanks to a cooperative effort by the university, the town of Amherst, and Hampshire and Amherst colleges, the town’s fire department has a new thermal-imaging camera, an upgraded version of one they already have. Seeing in the dark is what it makes possible, translating slight differences in temperature into visual images. The cameras will arrive at fire scenes on the department’s two front-line fire engines.
