Club Leaders Gather to Strategize

As evidenced by the splashes of capital letters among the addresses below, club leaders traveled from exotic climes (Texas! Iowa!) as well as nearer-by locations to the 1997 Alumni Leadership Conference at Memorial Hall January 3-5. In keeping with the campaign mode into which campus leaders are urging the UMass community, this year's training session was especially focused and intense. "There's a genuine feeling among the alumni staff and volunteers that the success of Campaign UMass, and thus the future of the university, depends to a great extent on an effort to engage alumni as advocates and contributors," said new director of alumni programs Keith Hamilton. "We believe the clubs will make a significant difference towards the accomplishment of campaign goals, and we specifically wanted to convey to the club leaders that the support for UMass we initiate through the clubs network will pay huge dividends."

THE COOLEST SNAPSHOT TO RETURN FROM TAIWAN
with Chancellor David Scott and Associate Provost Barbara Burn shows the UMass administrators with a ferocious piece of statuary. But the week-long working trip to the East Asian Republic was mostly back-to-back visits to institutions and groups seeking stronger connections with UMass.
Joined by Dr. Kathleen Scott, Burn and Scott visited five universities, including National Chengchi (where they found An-Pang Kao G`86 on the faculty), and Tamkang (on the warm invitation of its president, Yun-Shan Lin G'67.) Other appointments included a Presidential Palace audience with President Lee Teng-huat at the and a dynamite reception and dinner hosted by the Taipei alumni club and its leader Thomas Y. Shen G'71'74.
