Being a graduate student is exciting and challenging. Whether you’re continuing your studies at UMass Amherst, are coming from another college, or returning to school later in life, your interests and needs may be different than those of undergraduates.
UHS can help you simplify your busy life. With our wide range of services here on campus, it’s easier to take care of your health.
About health coverage
The Student Health Fee
Students taking five or more credits are automatically billed for the mandatory Student Health Fee. The Student Health Fee isn’t health insurance, but works together with your plan.
Those taking fewer than five credits, degree-seeking Continuing Education or University Without Walls students and Graduate Employee Organization (GEO)-eligible students must come to UHS Patient Services before the end of the Add/Drop period to enroll.
Primary health insurance
Massachusetts requires all students to have primary health insurance. The Student Health Benefit Plan is automatically billed to students taking five or more credits; if you have comparable primary insurance already, you must waive the plan online to avoid charges.
If you’re taking fewer than five credits, want family coverage, are a degree-seeking Continuing Education or University Without Walls student or are Graduate Employee Organization (GEO)-eligible, you must come to UHS Patient Services before the end of the Add/Drop period to enroll.
State law also requires students to submit proof of immunization; the deadline is the end of the Add/Drop period.
