Respectful Workplace Committee

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
–Leo Buscaglia

The Respectful Workplace Committee (RWC) is an active, energetic and creative group which enhances UHS’ working environment. From employee recognition to spirited theme days, the RWC fosters the team spirit and sense of family which sets UHS apart. Recent efforts have included:

  • an employee recognition center, where patients and colleagues can acknowledge exceptional efforts;

  • community-building, including potlucks, picnics, theme days for fun or community service and more;

  • trips and activities; and

  • morale-builders including T-shirts, coffee, breakfasts and other treats.

About FISH

UHS’ Respectful Workplace Committee introduced health center staff to FISH several years ago, as an invitation to a different way of engaging with work and life.

At UHS, FISH stands for First In Student Health. The program's elements emerged from a film about Seattle’s Pike Place Fish Market. Learn more at the official FISH website.

FISH is the belief that:

  • Life is too precious to be just passing through.

  • We can bring our whole selves to work, or most of ourselves.

  • We’re going to be at work anyway. Who and how do we want to be while we’re here?

  • We’re all in this together.

The FISH Principles

Play: having fun, enjoying yourself, and being spontaneous and creative.

Make Their Day: doing something special for your customers and co-workers.

Be There: being totally focused on the moment and on the person or task with which you’re engaged.

Choose Your Attitude: accepting full responsibility for all of our choices.
