UMass health professionals present at NECHA annual conference

SuEllen Hamkins, MD, Joshua Relin, Psy.D. co-presented a program and Amanda Collings-Vann, MEd presented in a separate workshop , to the annual conference of the New England College Health Association (NECHA) that took place in Portland, Maine on November 7th and 9th.

"No Butts About It Day" at UMass Amherst Amherst

Sunday, November 4 was the seventh annual "No Butts About It Day," an event, organized by the Center For Health Promotion. This year about 175 participants collected 39 pounds of improperly discarded cigarette butts from around campus. Contact CHP health educator, Tom Schiff, for more information.

Stigma Free Tree

The UMass Amherst Chapter of Active Minds will host a "Stigma Free Tree" event on Tues., Oct. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. outside of Goodell. Students are invited to write about personal struggles and hang their writing on a tree on the lawn. Visitors can share experiences and read what others have written. The group will also staff a table in the Campus Center to educate about mental health and stigma. These events correspond with Active Minds' National Day without Stigma 2012.

Rockland-Miller presents workshop.

Harry Rockland-Miller, Ph.D, will present a workshop entitled, Suicide Prevention Strategies for the Campus Community: Experiences from Two Universities at the annual meeting of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD), October 24th in Newport, RI.

Gelaye and Rockland-Miller present at legal conference

UMass Amherst Dean of Students Enku Gelaye and Harry Rockland-Miller, director of the school's Center for Counseling and Psychological Health, co-presented July 16 at the National Legal Aid & Defender Association’s 2012 Student Legal Services Section Conference in Burlington, VT. Their presentation, Assessing and Responding to Disturbed and Disturbing Student Clients: Understanding Student of Concern Teams, focused on recognizing and assisting university students in distress.

Psychological assessments continued throughout the summer.

Assessment services for psychological difficulties including ADHD and learning disorders continued throughout the summer at UHS' Center for Counseling and Psychological Health (CCPH). Students available for one to two on-campus appointments this summer were able to have assessments completed before the start of fall semester. Consumer Reports survey: UHS provides four-star care

UHS scored high marks in a statewide survey ranking 487 medical practices on key aspects of patient experience, including doctor-patient relationship and access to care, and measuring patients' willingness to recommend. Findings are published as a special insert in the June issue of Consumer Reports magazine.
