Learning Support Services (LSS) provides a full range of academic support services
to all students in the areas of mathematics, science, humanities, social sciences,
and study strategies. LSS's mission is to improve retention and graduation rates
at the University of Massachusetts Amherst by providing learning support programs
and self-development activities that enhance skills for college success.
Tutor certification is offered to students who complete the requirements established
by the College Reading and Learning Association, namely 10 hours of training
offered through the two-credit course LSS 297A and 25 hours of documented tutoring
experience.

The Courses
250 Tutoring the College Student
(both sem) 2 cr
Seminar. Introduction to tutoring, including the tutor-tutee relationship,
communication skills and tutoring strategies, responding to individual student
needs and learning styles, and guidelines for tutoring specific disciplines.
Fulfills course requirement for tutor certification issued by the College Reading
and Learning Association.
