General Admissions Information
Residency Certification
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires all applicants to complete the residency
statement which is part of the application for admission.
Recommendations
Although not required to do so, students may submit teacher and counselor recommendations
with their application to provide further information or insights.
Interviews
Interviews are not required as part of the admissions process but are available
throughout the year. These appointments are for informational purposes and are
not a part of the application evaluation process. Please call the Admissions
Office to schedule an appointment, tel. (413) 545-0222.
Visits to Campus
Visits to campus by prospective students and their parents are encouraged.
The University Tour Service provides guided hour-long walking tours daily at
11 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. throughout the year (excluding legal holidays,
Thanksgiving weekend, Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend, weekends in June
and July, Christmas week, and University March break). For more information
and arrangements for special tours, write the University Tour Service, University
Admissions Center, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA 01003, or call (413)
545-4237.
Group information sessions are conducted Mondays through Saturdays at 12:30
p.m. (excluding legal holidays, weekends in June and July, Christmas week, and
University March break). These admissions information sessions provide an opportunity
for students and parents to speak with an admissions counselor. For more information,
call the Admissions Office, tel. (413) 545-0222.
Alumni Admissions Council
The Alumni Admissions Council is a network of University alumni, living in
different parts of the country, who are available to inform prospective students
about the University. They are not "interviewers," but instead provide
interested students with the opportunity to learn more about the University
of Massachusetts Amherst. If you would like to speak with an Alumni Admissions
Council representative, write the Admissions Office for the name of the alum
nearest to your home area.
New Students Program
All new students attend an orientation/preregistration program prior to enrollment.
Activities include meetings with faculty advisers, academic placement testing
and counseling, preregistration for courses, explanation and selection of campus
housing options, and an introduction to social, cultural, and academic opportunities
