Diverse types of students whom teachers encounter in American schools. Interrelationship between this diversity and changes in society.

357 Introduction to Urban Education

Survey of urban and suburban schools; the process of learning in urban classrooms, the effects of the present curriculum, various innovative techniques as they apply to urban schools.

376 Pre-Professional Laboratory Experience in Occupational Education (both sem) 1-4 cr

Directed observation of vocational agriculture programs in the public schools and/or of Cooperative Extension Services programs in county offices, depending on student occupational aspirations. Observations conducted in two or more schools/county offices during a five-day period. Daily log and evaluative report. Own transportation.

377 Introduction to Multicultural Education (both sem)

Introduction to the sociohistorical, philosophical, and pedagogical foundations of cultural pluralism and multicultural education. Topics include experiences of racial minorities, white ethnic groups and women; intergroup relations in American society, sociocultural influences and biases in schools; and philosophies of cultural pluralism.

378 Survey of Children's Literature

Traditional and recent examples of children's literature; the variety of books available.

391 Seminar: Introduction to Early Childhood Education

Helps prospective early childhood teachers explore what it means to teach, examine their assumptions about the teaching-learning process, and formulate their own beliefs about educational practice based on how young children think and learn. Includes discussion of curriculum and pedagogical issues and a group experience of constructing one's own knowledge.

394 Seminar: Preschool Methods and Curriculum

Students work with supervisors on knowledge, skills, curriculum, and attitudes in the teaching process.

403 Seminar in Human Relations

Theory and practice of human relations in schools within the framework of the Integrated Day approach to teaching/learning for student teachers in the field.

424 Principles and Methods of Teaching Multi-Arts in the Elementary School

The roles of multi-arts in the elementary school curriculum.

428 Reading Instruction: Principles and Strategies (both sem)

Introduction to reading instruction. Critical overview of current approaches, methods, materials. Introduction to theories about the reading process and children's acquisition of written language.

435 Methods and Materials for Bilingual Classrooms: ESL

Methods, techniques and materials relevant to the teaching of Spanish-speaking students in U.S. bilingual classrooms.

459 Principles and Methods of Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School (both sem)

Students evaluate various state, commercial, and project social studies curricula in terms of instructional strategies. Practical experience in creating a social studies unit.

463 Principles and Methods of Teaching Mathematics in the Elementary School (both sem)

Introduction to the structure of mathematics; the role, methods, material, and curricular aspects of mathematics education in the elementary school.

472 Principles and Practices in Vocational Education (1st sem)

Primarily for agricultural majors seeking Vocational Teacher Approval (certification). A foundations course in occupational education. Emphasis on secondary and postsecondary programs; the relationship of vocational education to the total educational curriculum. Historical development, objectives, role, and operational organization and practices. Prerequisites: PSYCH 305, EDUC 376.

473 Apprentice Teaching in Agriculture (both sem) 6-12 cr

Student teaching internship. A semester of full-time teaching in a vocational agriculture school or department. Participation in activities of school and community: FFA advisement, home and/or on-job-site visits of students, and seminars on problems of teaching. Usually requires living near teaching site for entire semester. Prerequisites: admission to teacher preparation program in agriculture and EDUC 475. Own transportation.

475 Methods and Materials for Teaching Occupational Education (2nd sem)

With lab. Primarily for agricultural majors seeking Vocational Teacher Approval (certification). Special methods and materials used in teaching vocational agriculture; emphasis on teaching-learning process and the problem-solving instructional technique. Development of behavioral objectives, lesson plans, and courses of study. A learn by doing course involving some micro teaching. Prerequisites: PSYCH 305, EDUC 376.

Field experiences in a local classroom. Consent of instructor required.

Professional seminar which accompanies EDUC 500C. Involves working with supervisors and professors on knowledge, skills, and attitudes of interns in the teaching process.

Exploration of the range of knowledge required for communicative competence in English. Pedagogical issues in language learning.

Readings and evaluations of current theories and research on first and second language acquisition. Connection of readings to issues of second language teaching.

The stages of a child's development through art, and techniques to foster creativity.

505 Documentary Filmmaking for Education

Creative and practical use of filmmaking to document a wide variety of educational activities. Emphasis: making super-8mm film using live action photography, editing and sound techniques.

Discipline and classroom management; skill in and use of media equipment; role of the teacher in guidance.

511 Teaching Math in the Middle and High School (both sem)

The nature and content of mathematics, learning strategies, and values of self and society. For pre-service math teachers; aid in formulation of individual philosophy and rationale.

512 Teaching Science in the Middle and High School (both sem)

The nature and content of science, learning strategies, and values of self and society. For pre-service science teachers; formulation of individual philosophy and rationale for education in science.

514 Teaching Social Studies in the Middle and High School (both sem)

Goals and strategies for secondary school social studies instruction; critical examination assists development of defensible rationale for teaching. A pre-service offering.

515 Teaching English in the Middle and High School (both sem)

Purposes, problems, issues, methods, and materials in the teaching of English at the secondary level. Case studies, projects. Prerequisite for student teaching in English.

517 Introduction to Computer Use in Teaching (R2) 1-4 cr

With lab. Uses of the computer in the teaching/learning process. Topics include: introduction to computer programming in APL; survey of computer applications in education; advanced problem solving; and computer tutoring of children.

518 Career Education: An Overview

Emphasis on the fact that career education does not need to be an added-on course. Students are encouraged to become aware of what is happening around them and to demonstrate ways of improving education through career education.

Prepare students to assume leadership roles of youth organizations in their local schools and communities, in both urban and rural settings. How to organize and carry out organization activities.

For teachers seeking certification at the middle or high school level in English, math, science or social studies. Based on field experience in the schools. Examines the work of middle and high school teachers in its social and organizational context.

527 Introduction to the Educational Uses of Computers

Using the microcomputer to do a better job of running a school. Application of computer technology to schools, including administration, student record systems and scheduling, guidance, research, and general societal impact. Computer programming experience (not required) available in an associated microcomputer lab.

533 Teaching English as a Second Language: A Methods Approach
(both sem)

Philosophy of instruction, basic speech, basic linguistics, and instructional methodology. Not for first-year students.

Criteria and processes for the selection of objectives, content, teaching strategies, and assessment measures.

535 Educational Media, Technology, and Systems

With lab. The characteristics, capabilities, applications, and implications of a variety of media to a variety of educational strategies.

539 Using Video and Film in Education

With lab. The use of creative and stimulating films in educational settings; the techniques used by filmmakers; methods for structuring film discussions.

546 Educational TV Workshop

For teachers and teacher interns. The hardware of television; experimental use of television in solving educational problems. Readings: Small Studio Video Tape Production.

559 Curriculum Development in Multicultural Education

Curriculum theory, design, and resources for multicultural education. For term projects students develop multicultural curriculum units that can be taught in elementary and secondary schools.

567 Introduction to Bilingual Education

Focus on legislation, court decisions, history, case studies, standards in certification, organization models, and cultural backgrounds in bilingual-multicultural education.

570 Introduction to Guidance and Counseling (both sem)

Introduction to the field of guidance and counseling.

588 Teaching About the Puerto Rican Experience

Introduces teachers, prospective teachers, and other professionals to Puerto Rican history, culture, and experiences in the U.S., and to strategies for implementing this understanding in the curriculum.
