The Department
The department is committed
to the preparation and ongoing professional and intellectual development
of teachers and educational spec-ialists in
PreK-12 schools. It focuses on teacher education, curriculum frameworks,
organizational improvement, and issues of equity facing students, teachers,
and schools today. It is committed to providing instruction, conducting
research, and offering service that supports the development of educators
who, through their leadership, contribute to equity and excellence in education in the Commonwealth and throughout the nation. The department also supports graduate programs
in the areas of: Bilingual, English as a Second Language, and Multi-cultural
Education; Child and Family Studies; Child Studies and Early Education;
Education Technology; Elementary Teacher Education; Language, Literacy
and Culture; Mathematics and Science Education; Reading and Writing; Secondary
Teacher Education; and Teacher Education and School Improvement.
The Major
The Education major has
two tracks, in Early Childhood Education and Development and in Elementary
Education. The major is open only to students who are completing Education
as a second major. Admission is by

Requirements
1. Both tracks require
completion of 27 credits of Arts and Sciences courses in addition to courses
taken to fulfill General Education requirements. These may include courses
taken to complete the requirements of the student's primary major.
2. Track requirements are
fulfilled by completing the requirements of the appropriate certification
program (Early Childhood Educator Certification or Elementary Teacher
Certification). However, certification can be earned only if the student
also completes an academic major in the liberal arts and sciences.
