General Physical Education
(GPE) is a part of the School of Education. The instructional program
provides an extensive array of physical activity courses open to all University
and Five College students. Most courses are designed for the beginner
level unless a prerequisite is noted or an advanced level is listed.
All courses are available on an elective basis since
the University does not have a Physical Education requirement. Upon successful
completion of a course the student receives undergraduate academic credit.
Most courses award one credit but certification courses award two credits.
Each course may be completed only once for degree credit.
Undergraduate students peer teach many of the class
sections and earn two academic credits. The program gives undergraduates
the opportunity to learn and practice leadership and teaching skills through
classroom study and practical experience. Applicants with the necessary
background and expertise may apply for instructor
positions at the GPE office, 16 Furcolo Hall.
