102 Aerial Techniques (both sem) 1 cr

Principles of rigging, advanced rope techniques, and chainsaw applications for tree pruning and removal.

110 Introduction to Forestry (2nd sem)

Lecture. Broad overview of the practice and profession of foresry. Participants acquire the tools to understand forest management decisions, communicate with foresters, and appreciate forests, their complexity, and judicious stewardship.

190T Tree and Forest Techniques
(2nd sem) 1 cr

Practical field exercises in arboriculture and forestry.

191 Seminar in Arboriculture and Park Management (2nd sem) 2 cr

Broad introduction to the various job opportunities in arboriculture, urban forestry, and parks. Eight-week course.

197A Forest Fire Control (2nd sem) 1 cr

Training in forest fire control principles and procedures including fire-line safety, fire weather, and fire behavior. Students may meet Federal Interagency Fire Qualification for "Firefighter."

198 Cooperative Work Training 4 cr

Required of all students majoring in Arboriculture and Park Management. Five months (April-September 1) cooperative work training for work experience in the field. Submission of reports and collections required.

305 Private Tree Business (1st sem)

Programs and surveys dealing with trees; private tree work. For students desiring primarily arboriculture.

310 Urban Forestry (2nd sem)

Management principles of municipal and utility tree care, land use problems, tree laws and ordinances.

321 Timber Harvesting (2nd sem)

With lab. Components of timber harvesting systems: felling, bucking, primary transportation, secondary transportation, etc. Integration of components into efficient, safe and cost-effective harvesting systems emphasized. Lab: Case studies of harvesting operations.

332 Principles of Arboriculture (1st sem)

The use and maintenance of trees in the urban environment from both a private and government perspective.

333 Principles of Arboriculture II (2nd sem) 2 cr

Continuation of FOREST 332. Lab fee for Arboriculture and Park Management majors. Eight-week course.

334 Forest Measurements (1st sem)

With lab. Quantification and assessment of resource variables; sampling theory and design of forest inventories and other resource survey techniques; field exercises in resource inventory; statistical analysis of field data. Prerequisites: NRC 290E and 290P, RES EC 211, MATH 104 or equivalent.

426 Silviculture (1st sem)

With lab. The manipulation of the forest environment and the cultural treatment of stands of trees for the production of wood products, water, wildlife, and aesthetics. Intensive culture, small woodlot management and economic alternatives stressed. Prerequisites: NRC 290E and 290P.

492 Seminar:

Verbal Communication Skills (1st sem) 2 cr

Practice in using verbal communication skills in a wide variety of applied situations. Emphasis on participation in realistic exercises, such as group discussion, debate, public speaking on a technical subject, and group presentations.

515 Forest Fire Management (2nd sem odd yrs)

With lab. Principles of forest fire science (fire history, weather, effects of fire on organisms and the environment, fuels). Application of fire to land management practices. Prerequisite: FOREST 197A or consent of instructor.

527 Tree Physiology (2nd sem even yrs)

With lab. Photosynthesis, water relations, internal long distance transport, and the re-gulation of growth and reproductive processes. Prerequisites: NRC 290E and 290P or BIOL 104 or consent of instructor.

528 Forest and Wetland Hydrology
(1st sem)

Hydrologic structure and function of forest, wetland, and agricultural ecosystems. Changes in water flow and quality asso-ciated with land and resource use. Management approaches to prevent or reverse adverse environmental impacts.

540 Forest Resources Management
(2nd sem) 4 cr

With lab. Capstone course focused on balanced use of forests to meet multiple objectives. Historical summary followed by review of contemporary forest management. Practicum includes site visits, interaction with practitioners and landowners, term project. Prerequisites: FOREST 426 and W&FCON 261 or equivalents; FOREST 321 and 334 desirable.

577 Ecosystem Modeling and Simulation (1st sem odd yrs)

Basic concepts in general systems theory and computer modeling used in ecology. Case histories of models used to critically review the ecological modeling literature.

587 Introduction to Digital Remote Sensing (2nd sem) 4 cr

Computer processing of digital images as a means of obtaining information about natural resources. LANDSAT images primarily used. Image processing, classification, and image enhancement techniques discussed and applied.

592G Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Forestry 1-3 cr

Use and application of GIS mapping habitat and relating forestry to spatial habitat patterns. Hands-on use of ARC/INFO on PC or UNIX.
