201 Introduction to Wood Science (BSL) (1st sem)

With lab. The structure of wood, our most valuable renewable natural resource, as related to its properties, processing technology, uses in consumer products, and recycling. Important timber species, wood identification methods, and biodegradation by fungi and insects.

203 Forest Products (2nd sem)

Overview of the contribution of the forest to human requirements for shelter, paper products, furniture, food, and chemicals; emphasis on the sociological and economic importance and long-range potential of forest fiber, including recycling.

211 Energy Efficient Housing (1st sem
odd yrs)

Energy conservation in contemporary residential construction. Emphasis on: energy efficient building materials, products and construction technology; alternative energy sources; passive solar design; environmental concerns, regulatory issues and building codes.

290A Building Materials Computing and Telecommunications

Hands-on experience with the Internet and PCs. Decision-making skills developed using information age technologies to solve building materials problems. Students encouraged to use innovative approaches to solve business problems.

304 Properties of Wood (2nd sem)

With lab. Physical, mechanical properties of wood, especially as critical to wood product technology. Basic techniques for physical measurement and mechanical testing. Introduction to scientific investigation, including design of experiments, data collection and analysis. Prerequisite: BMATWT 201 or consent of instructor.

311 Building Materials I (1st sem even yrs)

Overview and discussion of the various types of building materials used in light-frame construction. Focus on performance, available options, cost, and market acceptance of wood and non-wood building materials.

313 Light-Frame Structure Technology (1st sem)

Analysis and review of the entire light-frame construction process, from regulation and design through site preparation, project management, and ultimate delivery of a completed structure.

314 Architectural Blueprint Reading and Estimating (2nd sem)

Fundamentals and interpretation of construction drawings, written specifications, quantity take-offs, and cost estimates in light-frame construction. Prerequisite: BMATWT 313 or consent of instructor.

352 Building Materials and Forest Products Marketing (2nd sem)

Introduces marketing concepts as applied to the building materials industry, the "4 Ps" of marketing: product, price, place and promotion of both consumer and industrial building materials products, market segmentation, industry structure, and competition.

492 Building Materials Seminar (2nd sem) 1 cr

Guest lectures by industry professionals.

511 Wood Adhesives Technology (2nd sem odd yrs)

With lab. Adhesion phenomena and the properties of adhesives; principles of wood gluing; methods of testing glued products; evaluation of results; processes and means of control. Prerequisites: BMATWT 201, 304.

512 Wood Protection (2nd sem even yrs)

With lab. Materials and methods used to protect wood and wood products from decay, fire, weathering, and other agents of deterioration; includes wood preservation and finishing.

552 Building Materials Distribution and Sales Management (1st sem)

Marketing channels of distribution, wholesailing, retailing, channel design, measurement, and management in the building materials industry. Personal selling, designing, developing and directing the sales force, sales training, evaluating the sales force, and the strategic role of sales in the building materials organization. Prerequisite: BMATWT 391A or other introductory marketing course.
