Librarians

The University Library System consists of the 28-story W.E.B. Du Bois Library, two science libraries, and the music library. Present library holdings include more than five million books, periodical volumes, and government documents; over two million of these items are in microformat.

The W.E.B. Du Bois Library is the location for most reference materials, and the book and periodical collection in the social sciences and humanities. As well, it houses the microfilm collection, a law collection, the University archives, special collections and rare books, and the Government Documents collection. The reserve reading collection and audio-visual reserve materials are available on the Library's third floor. The Music Library is on floors 18 and 19 of the Du Bois Library and includes music materials and listening facilities. A Music reserve lab with listening facilities is scheduled to open in the Fine Arts Center in spring 2000. Most of the science collection is found in two branch libraries: the Biological Sciences Library, tel. 545-2674, on the second floor of the Morrill Science Center, and the Physical Sciences and Engineering Library, tel. 545-1370, on the second floor of the Lederle Graduate Research Center.

A current UCard, the University photographic I.D., serves as a library card. Reference librarians provide information about the library system and the use of its collections, and about Five College library cooperation. They offer instruction in using electronic resources and developing strategies for research through class sessions, workshops and individual appointments.
