Food Services

University Food Services, tel. 545-2472; www.aux.umass.edu/diningservices, offers menus with a wide selection of food at each meal. These menus, designed by a task force of students, managers, chefs, and a dietician, are based on sound nutritional patterns, surveys of student food preferences, and comments from students and staff members.

Five dining facilities, serving students with all-you-can eat options, are located in residential areas: Hampshire, Berkshire, and Hampden Dining Halls in Southwest; Worcester Dining Hall in Northeast; and Franklin Dining Hall in Central. Hampshire, Worcester and Franklin are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. Berkshire is open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays and weekends. Worcester and Berkshire are open until 9 p.m., Monday to Wednesday. Hampden serves dinner for all University sports teams, on weekdays only, 5 to 8 p.m. The UCard (the University student ID card) serves as a meal ticket, and is required for entrance into the dining halls.

The deluxe plan provides unlimited access to all of the dining halls. The value plan offers 224 meals per semester, an average of two meals per day. The basic plan offers a total of 160 meals per semester, an average of 10 meals per week. Meals on these plans can be eaten any day of the week, including weekends, at any of the dining halls. Your Campus Meal Plan (Light, Commuter Express, and Economy) is available to residential students with 54 or more completed credits, off-campus students, and graduate students, Monday through Sunday, at any dining hall and many cash operations on campus. The kosher meal plan is offered for a fee additional to any of the meal plans and includes dinner during the week. It is served at the Hillel House, next to campus. Butterfield residence hall, a student cooperative, offers meals as part of the deluxe plan for residents of Butterfield and a limited number of other students.

Meal plans are mandatory for all undergraduates who are required to live in University residence halls and have less than 54 completed credits. Exemptions will be approved for extenuating circumstances only. Applications can be obtained by contacting Food Services. Refunds are pro-rated on a weekly basis and will be subject to an administrative fee if the application is received after the semester begins. Students who are not required to purchase a meal plan but who wish to eat in a dining hall have several options for doing so. They may purchase a meal plan or the new Your Campus Meal Plan for the semester, a single meal on a cash basis, or meal options for a five-day period (strip tickets).

Food Services operates three convenience stores located in Worcester, Franklin, and Hampden dining halls. Each stocks a variety of groceries, frozen foods, and sundries and is open daily. Food Services also offers snack bar services daily in Hampden and weekdays in Whitmore and the Physical Plant.

Various cafs and snack bars are located in the Campus Center/Student Union complex. Services range from fast foods and multinational foods in the Hatch Food Court to fine dining. The Coffee Shop and Blue Wall offer pizza, deli, pasta, short order, and display cooking. The ice cream shop provides snacks and meals, and along with the Coffee Shop and Hatch, a place to socialize in the center of campus. Subscribers to Your Campus Meal Plan can use Campus Center cafs and the snack bars. Full catering is available for student, staff, and faculty events.
