Career Network
Mather Building, 545-2224
The Career Network is a
new program consisting of seven teams of career and field experience advisers
located in academic schools and colleges.
Even before they graduate, students are call-ed upon to make a number of life decisions.
Students are encouraged not to wait until their final year, but to begin exploring the world
beyond the University early, with the aid of qualified staff. To help
them make intelligent, well-informed career choices, the University offers
career planning assistance, opportunities to
obtain practical, pre-professional experience, and referral
to employers. In this way, students receive help making crucial
choices, and smooth and successful transitions from school to work or
further study.
Career Planning: There are a variety of career planning services available
to help students make good career choices from their entering year until
after graduation. A computer-assisted guidance system, individual advising,
and workshops, introduce students to career planning. An annual graduate
school fair, a computerized alumni network, alumni career panels, and
a Career Library help them explore occupations and graduate education.
Pre-employment services include the opportunity to
interview with employers on campus, a computer-assisted resum referral
program, and career fairs, all putting students in touch with employers
throughout the state, across the country, and even around the world. Skills
workshops offer instruction in resume writing, effective interviewing,
job search strategies, and survival tips for the first professional job.
Field Experience: Internship and cooperative education programs encourage
students to explore academic and personal interests, acquire new skills,
make professional contacts, and learn more about the world at large. Opportunities exist in Massachusetts, and throughout the U.S. Many offer attractive
salaries which can offset some of the cost of attending the University.
Volunteer community service and service learning programs provide opportunities
for students to contribute time and talent to the community.
Students may obtain individual career planning assistance
by major, simply by contacting the professional career counselor assigned
to their particular school or college: Engineering
Career Planning Adviser, 545-6251; Food and Natural Resources Career Planning
Adviser, 545-6011; Humanities and Fine Arts Career Planning Adviser, 545-6255;
Natural Sciences and Math Career Planning Adviser, 545-6252; Social and
Behavioral Sciences Career Planning Adviser, 577-0417.
Students may obtain individual assistance with co-op
and internship planning by contacting the Field Experience Adviser assigned
to their particular academic unit. For contact information, see "Cooperative
Education and Internships" elsewhere in this catalog.
Employment Referral
and Other Services: Many students as they approach the senior year
have questions pertaining to full-time employment which may be answered
by the Career Network staff assigned to their major. Job interviews by
employers who recruit on campus take place at the Mather Building and
are arranged by the staff of the Employment Options department of the
Career Network. Students register for campus recruiting and apply for
interviews and job vacancies directly on the Network's Website: http://www-ccn.
acad.umass.edu. They may also consult with staff at any time, either in
person at the Mather Building or by calling 545-2224 and asking to speak
with someone in Employment Options.
Other services located
at the Mather Building include the Career Library, the Credentials Service,
the Field Experience administrative office, and Alumni Career Services.
All Career Network locations are open Monday-Friday,
8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. For further information, contact the central office in
the Mather Building, tel. 545-2224.
