The Major The curriculum concentrates on the interaction between consumers and the textile and clothing industries, nationally and internationally. A strong social science and humanities base complements the major. Successful students entering the field are innovative, and possess good communication and analytical skills. Requirements a. Departmental courses-A minimum of 32 credits in Apparel Marketing courses, including: 105 Introduction to Apparel and Textile Marketing 151 Design Fundamentals 155 Dress and Culture 161 Textiles 205 Principles and Concepts of Retailing 355 Contemporary Fashion Analysis 385 Retail Buying and Merchandise Management 495A Professional Senior Seminar b. Non-departmental courses-An additional 40 credits in Computer Science, Economics, Communication, Accounting, Management, Marketing, and Statistics. c. Internship (recommended)-Students are strongly urged to apply for a professional internship appropriate to individual career choice. An internship provides students with the opportunity to apply classroom preparation to the workplace. The program has developed relationships with department stores, specialty stores, off-price retailers, manufacturers, textile associations, and museums. Other professional experiences may include Cooperative Education, study abroad, and student exchange programs. The program has ties to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City and the London College of Fashion. Career Opportunities The apparel industry is a major employer in the United States. Because of its fast-paced nature, it constantly needs new professionals, particularly those graduating from four-year institutions who can enter management training programs. Students are prepared for careers in the retail industry including buying, store management, visual merchandising, customer relations, and personnel.
