129 Health Care for All: Myths and Realities (SBD) (1st sem)

U.S. health care system with emphasis on issues relating to unequal access to health services. An analysis of how the system should work. Special attention to controversial issues, including managed care and health insurance. How other countries design health systems.

160 My Body, My Health (I) (both sem)

Principles of health promotion and personal wellness with emphasis on stress management, nutrition, physical fitness, substance abuse prevention, prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases, and human sexuality. Students develop an extensive personal health portfolio and a behavior change contract.

213 Peer Health Education I

Contemporary health issues affecting college students: stress and time management, alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, and eating disorders. Students participate in campus outreach projects throughout the semester. Small group discussion, personal health assessment, and public speaking skills emphasized. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

214 Peer Health Education II

Using skills and knowledge from COM HL 213, students conduct educational programs in the residence halls, fraternities and sororities. Training in group facilitation, public speaking, leadership, and health education program planning. Significant evening work required. Prerequisites: COM HL 213 and consent of instructor.

215 Peer Health Education Special Topics

In-service training for Peer Health Educators who work with a special target population. Prerequisite: consent of instructor.

233 Sex, Drugs and AIDS (I) (2nd sem)

Global perspective on relationships between sexual behavior, drug use, and AIDS. Approaches to prevention, including education, HIV testing, control of sexually transmitted disease, drug abuse treatment, and needle exchanges.

505 Current Issues in Health Education (2nd sem)

Selected topics in health education such as: overview of health education principles in the context of legislative and public policy considerations, substance abuse, sexually transmitted disease, nutrition, and the special concerns of youth, women, and the aged. Emphasis varies from semester to semester.

525 Ethical Issues in Public Health

Problems in resource allocation, health research, adoption of technology, and related issues in the context of basic ethical principles. Group discussion emphasized.

582 Public Health and Family Planning

Introduction to family planning from epidemiological and health education perspectives. Family planning efforts in the private and public sector reviewed. Political and social implications of fertility and population control.

590D Public Health Policy Analysis and Development

Introduction to public health policy. The policy making process, policy analysis, and policy development. Emphasis on com-munity perspectives on state-level public health policies. Includes individual and small group assignments and presentations. Prerequisite: COM HL 601 or 620, or consent of instructor.

591 International Health

Seminar on international health policy systems and issues. Review of primary health care preventative approaches, emphasizing community health education efforts in developing countries.
