Welcome to the UMass Amherst UCard Office

Online Photo Submission Now Available to Summer 2017 Orientation Students

May 22, 2017

Don’t wait in line to take your id photo!

Starting Monday, May 22nd, incoming freshmen and transfer students that are participating in a New Students Orientation (NSO) session can upload their own UCard (campus id) picture to the UCard web site.  By submitting your id photo over the web before you attend your NSO session, you can avoid waiting in lines during your session or at the start of the semester.

What do you need before uploading your UCard photo?

  • You need to be a matriculated incoming freshman or transfer student seeking your initial UCard. Students who’ve already had UCards in the past, or who already have approved photos through photo upload should not use photo upload, but instead should come to the UCard Office to purchase replacement UCards.
  • You need to be enrolled in an in-person or online New Students Orientation session. See the NSO web site for more information about NSO sessions.
  • You need to know your UMass campus NetID and password. You’ll be using these to log in to the web site.  Contact Campus IT if you do not have this information. This is the same username and password that you use to log into SPIRE and you UMass email.
  • You need a digital photo of yourself that meets our UCard Photo Requirements.

Once you have everything, follow the online photo submission instructions and upload your photo!

Unexpected UCard (GET) Charges to Credit Cards

May 8, 2017

Dear Customers,

Over the past few days the UCard Office has received a number of calls and emails from customers regarding unexpected UCard-related credit card charges to their VISA credit cards on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th.  We apologize for any confusion that has resulted from these charges. However it is important to know that these charges are not erroneous, and are in fact corrections for duplicate refunds that were mistakenly done in March of this year.

In late February and early March, the University's credit card processor was having problems correctly processing UMass Amherst's GET transactions for several days.  As a result, a number of customers on three separate days were erroneously charged twice for their GET deposits.

Later in March, the University's credit card processor refunded all of these duplicate charges.   While this corrected the problem for Mastercard and Discover users, it unfortunately created a new problem for VISA card holders.

Unlike MCRD or DISC, VISA automaticaly refunded the duplicate charges, so when the University's credit card processor issued it's own refunds, VISA customers received a second, unwarranted refund.

To correct these duplicate VISA refund errors, the University's credit card processed recently charged customers' VISA accounts again, resulting in the charges customers are seeing.  So in all, the affected VISA cardholders were charged twice, then refunded twice, and finally charged again to get to the correct amounts that were owed.

If you are one of the affected customers, and feel that you were charged in error, we ask that you please take a look at your bank statements first. If you still think that an error has been made, then of course please contact our office.  But please be aware that it may take a few days for us to respond due to the volume of calls and emails that we've already received.

The affected dates involved are:

GET Deposits made on 02/26/17

  • Customers first charged on 02/27/17
  • Customers charged again on 02/28/17
  • Customers refunded by VISA on 03/02/17
  • Customers refunded by University CC Processor on 03/03/17
  • Customer charged again on 05/03/17

GET Deposits made on 02/28/17

  • Customers first charged on 03/01/17
  • Customers charged again on 03/02/17
  • Customers refunded by VISA on 03/05/17
  • Customers refunded by University CC Processor on 03/08/17
  • Customer charged again on 05/04/17

GET Deposits made on 03/04/17

  • Customers first charged on 03/05/17
  • Customers charged again on 03/06/17
  • Customers refunded by VISA on 03/10/17
  • Customers refunded by University CC Processor on 03/09/17
  • Customer charged again on 05/05/17

Once again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience involved in these corrections, and thank you for your patience as we work to respond to those of you who have already contacted us.

Unexpected University Store Charges on UCard

May 3, 2017

The UCard Office has received serveral call and emails about unexpected University Store transactions that hit some UCard debit accounts on May 3rd.  We apologize for any confusion that these charges may have caused.  However these charges are not erroneous, and are in fact corrections that occurred in late April and early May.

From April 18th through May 3rd, the interface between the UCard System and the University Store Point-of-Sale system was not functioning properly.  This problem caused a number of UCard sales transactions (and some refunds) to time out.  Timed out transactions were automatically voided, resulting in $0.00 transaction amounts.

When this problem was identified on May 3rd, all voided transations (sales and refunds) were re-submitted successfully.

If you are one of the affected customers, please take a look at your transaction history on GET and you should see a University Store transaction for $0.00 occurring between April 18th and May 3rd.  The charge/refund that you see on May 3rd is associated with that transaction.

if you still feel that the charge/refund is in errror, please contact the UCard Office and we can provide you a different report that actually shows the initial sales and associated void transactions.

Again, we sincerely apologize for any inconveniance this situation has caused.  The problem between the two systems has been remedied and so this problem should not occur again.

As a result, students and their families should not deposit funds to the UCard debit account for the purposes of purchasing books, and instead should purchase books from Amazon using an accepted payment method.
