Name Change FAQ

Q: Where does the name printed on the UCard come from?

A: The name printed on your UCard comes from SPIRE as part of a daily data feed to the UCard Office.  The UCard Office cannot change cardholders names, so any name changes must occur in SPIRE first.  Once the name has been changed in SPIRE, it typically shows up in the UCard system the next business day.

Q: My name is incorrect in SPIRE.  How do I correct that?

A1: If you are, or have ever been, a UMass student, you will need to go to the appropriate Registrar (Undergraduate, Graduate, or CPE) to have them correct your name in SPIRE.

A2: If you are an employee (and have never been a student), you will need to go to Campus IT (located in LGRC) to have your name corrected.  You should also ensure that your name is correct in the HR system, as changing your name in SPIRE does not affect your name in HR.

A3: If you are a NENS (Non-Employee, Non-Student) and have never been a student, you should contact the department that submitted a NENS form on your behalf.  They will need to contact Campus IT about correcting your name.

Q: I've had a legal name change.  How do I change my name on my UCard?

A1:  If you are, or have ever been, a UMass student, you will need to go to the appropriate Registrar (Undergraduate, Graduate, or CPE) to have them correct your name in SPIRE.  If you are an active employee, you should go to HR to change your name there as well

A2:  If you are a NENS or an employee (and have never been a student), you will need to go to Campus IT (located in LGRC) to have your name corrected.  If you are an active employee, you should go to HR to change your name there as well

Q: I changed my name in HR.  Why is my name still the same in SPIRE and the UCard system?

A: Because the SPIRE is the system of record for students, and employees can also be (or have been) students, the data feed from HR to SPIRE does not automatically update the name information in SPIRE.  You must also update your name in SPIRE by going to the appropriate Registrar (if you are/were a student) or Campus IT (if you were never a student.)  Please note that once you change your name in SPIRE, it takes a minimum of one additional day before the name change shows up in the UCard system.

Q: I have not had a legal name change, but am transgender and transitioning.  Is there any way to change my name on my UCard without a legal name change?

A: Yes.  UMass Amherst can create a "Campus Name" for you in SPIRE that will supercede the normal primary name in the daily UCard data feed.   For more information about how to get a Campus Name and how it is used, please see the Registrar's Gender Marker and "Campus Name" Change Form.   The Stonewall Center is also a great resource if you need additional information.

Q: I have not had a legal name change and am not transitioning, but would like something other than my legal name on my UCard.  Is this possible?

A:  No.  Currently the Campus Name is available only to transitioning members of the UMass community.  For all other members, the legal name will be printed on the UCard.

Q: Does changing my preferred name in SPIRE change what is printed on my UCard?

A:  No.  The preferred name only shows up on Course Rosters, in Moodle, and in the Campus Directory (PeopleFinder).  While your Campus Name does change the name printed on your UCard, it does not affect the aforementioned systems.  So if you are transitioning, you should both change your preferred name AND request a Campus Name.
