What Our Students Say...
“GCO was definitely a completely new experience and I feel it had changed the course of my life and I am so excited to see where it takes me. I had never imagined myself organizing and now I see that as an important path that I want to take. Every aspect of [the class] was new and I learned so much.”
“This course really challenged me to dig deep and uncover the root causes of oppression in our society.”
“…I learned lessons in this space that I could not have obtained in any other environment that I will certainly use not only in my career but also in my daily life.”
“I have an entirely new lens through which to observe the world and I have begun to learn how I can take all of this and be an agent for change.”
“I think this is one of the most valuable courses I have taken. I learned a lot that has informed all areas of my life and I can’t say that about many other classes. It is one of the only classes in which I could see growth within my classmates and myself. My only complaint is that it was too short.”
“I learned a lot about both myself and the world that I never had even considered investigating.”
“This class had been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I no longer look at unfair situations from a powerless point of view, but more with an optimistic point of view that I personally can change society.”
Testimonials from GCO 2014
"In one short week, I roamed the streets of Portland, saw Maine’s governor deliver a speech in person, learned how to choose and build a campaign, was deeply inspired by countless strangers, and created bonds that I truly believe can last a lifetime. I saw political processes firsthand. I learned a great deal about myself and found the strength to be a leader that I never knew I had. Thanks to GCO and Maine People’s Alliance, I found an outlet to turn my passion for collectivism and equality into something productive. My experience at MPA has made me excited for the future, a future that I am ready to tackle head-on with enthusiasm, ferocity, and determination. I have so much gratitude for everyone I met during our time spent with MPA for being part of such an eye-opening and motivating experience.”

"My name is Laura Dowd, and I am a Freshman at Umass Amherst. My experience at GCO has been really intense. At first, I thought it was going to be a class that logically informed me how to understand the art of grassroots community organization, but it was nothing like that, and it was so much more than that. GCO threw me right in to the knowledge as if I had had it all my life and just needed to have someone open my eyes and point to it. It gave me vocabulary I had never had before, and taught me how to look at things from a perspective that no one had ever asked me to look at things from. It was a unique experience that I would highly recommend for anyone who is ready to get their boundaries pushed! No class has ever given me so many opportunities to self reflect and let me figure out why I am learning what I am learning, and why I want what I want, and what has really led me to the place I am in right now. It's a class that will teach you how to look in so that you can do a better job of looking out. And most importantly, it is a class that will remind you that no matter how much you may feel like you know enough, there is always so much more to learn."
