Regina Galasso, Director

Regina Galasso has been Director of the Translation Center since September 2017. She is an assistant professor in the Spanish and Portuguese Program of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. She received her BA from Rutgers University, her MA from Middlebury College, and her PhD from the Johns Hopkins University. Her monograph Translating New York: The City's Languages in Iberian Literatures (Liverpool University Press, 2018) reveals the ways in which New York has played a fundamental role in the development of Iberian literatures. The manuscript of Translating New York received the Northeast Modern Language Association Annual Book Award. She is co-editor of the forthcoming collection titled Avenues of Translation: The City in Iberian and Latin American Writing (Bucknell University Press, 2018). Together with Carmen Boullosa, she is the editor of a 2012 special Nueva York issue of Translation Review featuring scholarly articles and literary translations associated with Hispanic New York. Her most recent volume of poetry in translation from the Spanish is Lost Cities Go to Paradise (Swan Isle Press, 2015) by Alicia Borinsky. She has also translated into English the work of Cuban writers Miguel Barnet and José Manuel Prieto, among others. She is a member of the editorial board of Translation Review. She regularly teaches the courses “Translation Today: Spanish-English” and “Practicing Literary Translation: Catalan-English-Portuguese-Spanish.” Before joining the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, she taught at the Borough of Manhattan Community College of the City University of New York.

Görkem Cilam, Assistant Director

Görkem Cilam holds a BA from Mount Holyoke College in Economics and German Cultural Studies. She is fluent in Turkish, English and German. In addition to her passion for languages, she brings to the Translation Center financial expertise from her prior engagements as a business manager and a management consultant. Most recently, she became a finalist in the EntreClub / Mass Ventures Business Competition. She also works with the Five College Center for the Study of World Languages, developing a web site with language learning materials for Turkish.

Shawn Lindholm, Project Manager

Shawn Lindholm holds a BA in French from Rutgers University and has trained in conference interpretation with Professor Dan Martin at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In addition to French, she has knowledge of Spanish and Russian. She has five years of administrative experience in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Río Hernández, Project Manager

Rio Hernandez holds a BA in History and Asian Studies from Cornell University and an MA in Translation Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a native speaker of Spanish with knowledge of Japanese and Thai.
