"One Corner of the Mat": Translation as Struggle (and Research)

"One Corner of the Mat": Translation as Struggle (and Research) with J. Michael Farmer (Associate Professor of Chinese Studies, University of Texas at Dallas)

Abstract: This lecture will introduce issues regarding the translation of classical Chinese historical and literary texts, including tools and skills required to address texts, subtexts, meaning, and significance. A close reading of two parallel accounts in suicial widows in early medievel Sichuan will demonstrate the "struggle" of research in the translation process, and illustrate its rewards. The anecdotes discussed here are a small portion of a larger project to translate, annotate, and analyze the fourth century regional history, Huayang guo zhi [Records of the States South of Mt. Hua]. Dr. Farmer will also happily talk about this project to anyone who cares to listen.
