THEBES - In the wake of Etocles’ and Polyneices’ mutual destruction on the battlefield of Thebes, our city must look to a new leader to guide out of these foreboding times.  That man, as it happens, is Creon.  The brother-in-law to the late Oedipus, Creon is no stranger to the political arena of Thebes, having served as a regent after Laius murder at the hands of Oedipus, and, briefly, after Oedipus’ exile many years later.  Many are embracing his ascension.  One citizen claimed, “He is a new king, but he’s right for this city at this moment.”  However, others have warned, “Let him [Creon] one overstep what the city allows, tramp down right or treat the willfully, as his own word, then he will have put himself beyond the pale... we will turn our back on him.”

As for the big man himself, he is eager to take on the job, and asks for the help of all of Thebes.  “Solidarity,” he claims, “is what we need.  The whole crew must close ranks. The safety of our state depends upon it.”

For now, all we can hope for is a king with a better track record than his predecessors.
