New faculty member profile: Assistant Professor of Costume Design Yao Chen

Yao is one of two new faculty members in the Department of Theater. Together, she and Assistant Professor of Scenic Design Anya Klepikov will give us a full complement of design faculty for the first time in several years, following the retirements of Miguel Romero and June Gaeke.

Professor Harley Erdman honored for his translations of early women Spanish playwrights

Department of Theater Professor of Dramaturgy Harley Erdman has received the the Josephine Roberts Award from of the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women for his work translating early women playwrights of Spain.

Renaissance woman — Linda Tardif takes over the Shea Theater

The Western Massachusetts town of Turners Falls has been brewing up a Renaissance for the past decade or so, with residents hard at work to address its problems and bring new businesses and restaurants to downtown. Part of the picture of that revitalized community is the newly-revamped Shea Theater.

Another set of ears — Amy Altadonna mentors Brendan Lynch in sound design

Brendan Lynch is an actor and a musician. When he came to UMass and started taking sound design courses, he realized that it was a fantastic way to meld his twin interests in theater and music. He found a mentor in sound design lecturer Amy Altadonna, who, like many of our faculty members past and present, has frequently augmented her teaching here at UMass with professional design work.

All three alumni had nothing but good words for UMass. Fitting to the theme of the weekend, Corddry recalled that seeing Donovan act in a play directed by Ed Golden (Playboy of the Western World) was his spur to get serious about studying theater.

The Department of Theater celebrates the new Ed Golden Scholarship

Jeffrey Donovan and Rob Corddry were in town, together with dancer and fellow alumna Tamara Hurwitz Pullman (representing herself and her husband, fellow alumnus Bill Pullman) to announce the creation of the new Ed Golden Acting Scholarship, which was awarded to two UMass Theater students earlier that afternoon.

Sri Lanka beckons: Harley Erdman travels across the world on a Fulbright

Spanish-language theater research, translation, and adaptation is dramaturgy professor Harley Erdman’s thing, and as he began to plan for his spring 2016 sabbatical, traveling to Latin America to work seemed all but inevitable. However, he says, “I also had this idea planted that I should do something totally new.” That desire, plus a fortuitous connection with a former graduate student, led Erdman to Sri Lanka for a semester as a Fulbright US Scholar, teaching theater, exploring the country, and making a good start on a new theater adaptation of a Sri Lankan author’s works about the country’s
