Kara-Lynn Vaeni directs theatre, musicals and opera. Last summer she directed High School Musical at the Maltz theatre in FL, premiered a new musical at The Duplex in NYC, premiered Goodbye New York, Goodbye Heart by award winning writer Lally Katz at HERE Arts Center and directed Opera Slavica’s inaugural production of Rusalka by Antonin Dvorak where her innovative staging and use of contemporary dance won her an extended invitation to perform from the director of the Czech Center in New York. This is her career in a nutshell.

Currently she is working on a collaboratively generated piece about female trickster heroes traveling through time. Recent projects include the premieres of Okay by Becky Yamamoto at HERE, Freak Candy by Princess Grace Award Winner Kara-Lee Corthron at The Wild Project, The Wendy Play by Amy Herzog at the Yale Repertory Theatre. Regional work includes Annie Get Your Gun at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Florida, and 365 Days/Plays at Dallas Theatre Center and The Public in NY, and the national tour of Lost in Yonkers for Montana Rep. A not so recent project, but still a personal favorite is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Musical, presented on Valentine’s Day for the Yale Cabaret.

Kara-Lynn is a Resident Director for the Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program at NYU, the Literary Manager of New Georges, a faculty member at Hofstra University and an Alumna of the Women’s Project Directors Lab. She was the First Alternate of the NEA/TCG Theatre Directors program in 2007-2009. She received her MFA in Directing from the Yale School of Drama in 2004 where she also received a Presidential Public Service Fellowship and the Julian Kauffman Prize for Directing.
