Industries of the Future (IOF) OverviewThe National ProgramThe Department of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies has launched
a national IOF effort to improve the resource efficiency of the nation's
most energy and waste intensive industries. The Industries of the Future
strategy creates partnerships between industry, government, and supporting
laboratories and institutions to accelerate technology research, development,
and deployment of new technologies. Industries that have been targeted
at a national level in this effort include petroleum refining, chemicals,
forest products, steel, aluminum, metal casting, and glass. A Regional PerspectiveNETI coordinated a regional project for the Department of Energy, working
with the UMass Amherst Center for Energy and Renewable Energy and Alfred
University to look at the most energy and waste intensive industries
in the Northeast. Focusing on the six New England states and New York
as a region, the report industried forest products, chemicals/plastics,
instruments and related projects, information/communication products,
and printing and publishing as industries with the largest economic,
energy, and environmental impact in the area. The State ProgramThe State Industries of the Future program builds on the industry visions
and priority areas identified at the national level to develop state
specific plans involving local industries, academia, and state agencies.
The goal is the same - to support the development and use of energy
efficient, renewable energy, and pollution prevention technologies with
industrial applications. IOF in MassachusettsThe Massachusetts Industries of the Future program is a partnership
between the state of Massachusetts and the U.S. Department of Energy
that provides a way for industry, government, and academia to work together
to continue to be competitive in changing global markets; to accelerate
product development and move to more efficient, lower-cost technologies;
and to address research and development needs of industry. Facilitated
by the University of Massachusetts Amherst -- working in close cooperation
with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, the
Department of Economic Development, and the Division of Energy Resources
-- the program brings together a diverse group of stakeholders representing
industry, industry trade groups, state and federal government, and academia.
Current efforts focus on the chemicals, metal casting, and forest products
industries. Massachusetts IOF Allied Partners
