Target Industries
Five industries have been identified as priority Industries for Massachusetts
Industries of the Future (MA IOF): chemicals and plastics, forest products,
metal casting, printing and publishing, and information technology and
electronics. Current activities focus on chemicals and plastics, forest
products, and metal casting.
Chemicals & Plastics
- Miscellaneous plastic products, industrial organics, resins, other
organics, drugs, cleaning and cosmetics, other chemical products
The chemical and plastics industries in Massachusetts include chemical
input manufacturers and chemical products manufacturing, the former
providing the later with raw materials for production. Chemical and
plastics inputs include industrial inorganic chemicals, plastics and
resins, organic chemicals, agricultural chemicals, and miscellaneous
plastics. Chemical product industries include pharmaceuticals, cleaners,
paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, and solvents. Plastic products
include plastic films, plastic sheets, plastic profiles, plastic bottles
and foam. These industries employ over 36,000 workers and generate
more than $3.5 billion in gross sales. Employee compensation in the
industry is more than $2.0 billion each year. The national roadmap
for the industry has identified new chemical science and engineering
technology, supply chain management, information systems, manufacturing
and operations as key areas for future investment. NETI hosted a Workshop
for the Chemicals and Plastics Industry in Massachusetts industries
in June 2000, identifying several priority areas for research.

Forest Products
- Pulp mills, paper products, paper board and containers, sawmills,
logging, veneer, plywood, millwork, other wood products
The forest products Industry includes paper mills, saw mills, cardboard
mills, technical paper manufacturers, and secondary wood products.
These industries employ 24,500 workers in Massachusetts and generate
more than $1.7 billion in gross sales. IOF priority areas include:
sustainable forest management, environmental performance, energy performance,
improved capital effectiveness, recycling, and sensors and control.
Metal Casting
- Metal casting (sand and die casting, heat treating), rolling/drawing/extruding,
drawing/insulating non-ferrous wire
The primary metals industries include metal casting, metal forging,
powder metalurgy, finishers, platers, heat treaters and fabricators.
These industries employ about 2,500 workers in state and generate
more than $300 million in gross sales. The National Roadmap identifies
products and market, materials technology, manufacturing technology
and environmental technologies as key areas.
Printing & Publishing
- Periodicals, newspapers, books, labels, maps, lithography, platemaking
The printing and publishing Industries include periodicals, newspapers,
commercial printing, book publishing, and miscellaneous publishing.
The industry employs more than 54,000 in the state and generates more
than $3.3 billion in gross sales. Though not a National IOF, this
manufacturing base is important in the New England region and is closely
tied to the national IOF Chemicals and Forest Products industries.
Information Technology, Electronics, and Instruments
- Computers, semiconductors/devices, electronic components, photographic,
analytical, medical instruments
The information technology and electronics Industries include the
manufacture of electronic computers, semi-conductors and related devices,
and electronic components. These industries generate about $8.0 billion
in value added product and employ about 72,000 workers.
