Secchi Dip-In

June 23 - July 15, 2007
The Great North American Secchi Dip-In is a demonstration of the potential of volunteer monitors to gather environmentally important information on our lakes, rivers and estuaries. To participate this year, visit http://dipin.kent.edu/
The concept of the Dip-In is simple: individuals in volunteer monitoring programs take a Secchi disk measurement on one day in a period surrounding Canada Day and July Fourth. Individuals may be monitoring lakes, reservoirs, estuaries, rivers, or streams. These Secchi transparency values are used to assess the transparency of volunteer-monitored lakes in the United States and Canada.
In 2002, MassWWP received
data for 17 water bodies, see results below. Water transparency varied between
0.8m (Lower Lake in the Connecticut River watershed) and 8m (Jenkins Pond
on the Cape).
