This workshop is designed for those seeking essential information on and introductory discussion of the Communication and Literacy Skills (CLS) portion of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL). Attend this workshop to avoid being surprised by the nature of the test and the test conditions. You will review CLS test strategies and sample questions. Also, you will leave with a comprehensive self-study guide that will include a mini-test, as well as grammar tips and a guide to other study materials.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT MULTISESSION WORKSHOPS

This multisession workshop of four, two-hour sessions is designed for those seeking intensive preparation for the Communication and Literacy Skills test. From the substance and structure of the test to the nuts and bolts of test taking, this workshop is designed for those seeking guided study, feedback and time between sessions for practice. You will receive three comprehensive study booklets covering the grammar, reading, and writing components of the CLS test. You will also have an opportunity to practice multiple written mechanics exercises.

Workshop Length: Four Sessions of Two Hours Each
Fee: $185.00 (covers all four sessions)

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SATURDAY WORKSHOP

This Saturday workshop is designed for those who cannot easily attend workshops offered during the week. Offering intensive preparation, this workshop focuses closely on all areas of the Communication and Literacy Skills test. You will receive comprehensive study guides for each component of the CLS test (reading and writing). You will also have opportunities to practice exercises like those you will face on the day of the test, including the written mechanics exercise.

Workshop Length: Six Hours (Saturdays)

MICHAEL G. SCHWARTZ MTEL PREPARATION WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIPS

The Michael G. Schwartz Scholarship Fund provides access to the MTEL preparation workshops to those who are not able to register because of financial need. Approval of the scholarship application will be based on proven financial need at the time of application. Applicants must also be seeking admittance to one of the University's professional preparation programs for Massachusetts' licensure.

Scholarships are available for the Saturday and Multisession Workshops only. Two scholarships per semester will be awarded. You may pick up a scholarship application in the School of Education (Room 130, Furcolo Hall).



MTEL WORKSHOP REGISTRATION INFORMATION

All prospective participants should register in the Educator Licensure Office in the School of Education (Room 130, Furcolo Hall; (413)545-2701). Payment by check or credit card is due at registration. Office hours are Monday through Friday (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). All participants must preregister. A minimum enrollment is required for each workshop to be held.

  • A $6.00 Continuing Education registration fee will be charged to all workshop registrants.
  • A $6.00 late registration fee will be charged after noon of the day prior to the workshop.

Directions to the School of Education (Furcolo Hall) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst:

From the North: Route 91 south to Exit 25. Turn left at end of ramp and follow road to the intersection. Turn right onto Routes 5&10 south. Go 1 mile, then left onto Route 116 south, then 8 miles to UMass Amherst exit. Left at end of ram onto Massachusetts Avenue. At traffic light, make a left. Pass the Mullins Center (green roof) on left and go straight through two traffic lights. At third light, make a left. The School of Education will be on your right.

From the South: Route 91 north to Exit 19. Take a right onto Route 9 and go approximately 4.5 miles to Route 116 north. Turn left at the light at Route 116 on-ramp and go 1 mile to UMass exit. Take a right at the end of ramp onto Massachusetts Avenue. At traffic light, make a left. Pass the Mullins Center (green roof) on left and go straight through two traffic lights. At third light, make a left. The School of Education will be on your right.

From the East and West: Take the Massachusetts Turnpike to Exit 4 (West Springfield), then follow directions above for coming from the south.

MASSACHUSETTS STATE TEST POLICY:

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Education licensure regulations require that all candidates for teacher licensure in Massachusetts pass the Communication and Literacy Skills (CLS) portion of the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL). In addition, all candidates in most licensure areas must pass the appropriate Subject Matter test to become licensed educators.

UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST and the
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION TEST POLICY:

The University of Massachusetts Amherst requires that undergraduate students take and achieve a passing score on the CLS test prior to admission into professional preparation programs in the University. Post-baccalaureate and graduate students are also required to achieve a passing score on the CLS normally in their first semester of study and in all cases prior to their practicum. (Students in all professional preparation programs for educators for which there is a Subject Matter test must take and pass the appropriate Subject Matter test as a prerequisite for the program's and University's recommendation for licensure.)
