Environmental Science '14
Born in Norton, Massachusetts where she grew up with her parents and two brothers, Jackie came to UMass Amherst with a strong desire to make a difference. She worked to foster broad campus-wide involvement in sustainability efforts at UMass by becoming a green campus leader and a Teaching Assistant in a number of her academic classes focused on sustainability. As an Environmental Science major with a minor in resource economics, Jackie found many opportunities on campus to learn and get involved with the green campus community. Outside of her classes and work with the Eco-Rep program, Jackie spent much of her time at UMass outdoors with friends enjoying the beautiful natural landscape of the Pioneer Valley. After graduating in summer 2014 Jackie will be going on to work with a wind power production distribution company that provides mid-size wind turbines to elementary, middle, and high schools in the Cape Cod area. Her work will focus on outreach to help regional communities in the Cape Cod area to learn more about the benefits of wind power.
During Jackie's sophomore year there was a UMass Eco-Rep program flyer handed out to her in one of her classes and she applied to the program as soon as she could. She learned about the principles of sustainability and got the chance to spread awareness as a green campus leader. With a new-found enthusiasm, Jackie eventually became an Area Eco-Rep and began facilitating a learning cluster in Southwest followed by two semesters in Northeast. Her work involved creating lessons plans, running meetings, and guiding students in how to best approach the issues of fostering sustainable behavior on campus. Jackie graduated this year, having spent her senior year as Program Manager overseeing one of the largest Eco-Rep programs in the country, where she has worked tirelessly to organize, plan and manage the program and oversee the Area Eco-Rep facilitators who help keep the program running.
