Leading by Example: Our Green Efforts and Positive Impact

At Sustainable UMass, under the leadership of Chancellor Subbaswamy, we are continuing to make a difference in the lives of our students, our regional community, our state, and nation. Below is a list of just a few of the beneficial green impacts and outcomes members of the UMass faculty, staff, and student body have had in our community:

  • UMass Amherst Permaculture Initiative is recognized by President Obama and the White House as the first place 2012 White House Champion of Change Award Winner for being one of the only public universities in the country to implement permaculture gardens directly on campus and utilizing the fresh food produced in the gardens directly in our UMass Dining Commons meals
  • Associate Professor of Architecture + Design Joseph Krupcynskyi Develops a Civic Engagement Plan for the New England Sustainable Knowledge Corridor Project
  • The UMass Amherst Open Education Initiative saves paper and generates a total savings of over $750,000 for students over a three year period
