As of August 2013 the Residential Life Department has designed a Model Green Room in Knowlton that will showcase eco-friendly items that incoming students can purchase from local organizations or online. The model green room concept originated from a student recommendation which was shared with the University as a formal project proposal (as part of a larger semester research project). After careful review the University decided to implement the Green Room in an effort to help support sustainability awareness on campus for incoming and prospective students.
The Sustainability Tracking Assessment Rating System (STARS) administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) has a credit for implementation of a model green residence hall room (Education & Research, Co-Curricular Education, Credit Tier 2-3: Model Room in a Residence Hall).
It was determined that implementing a model residence hall room would not only improve the University’s standing in STARS, but would also help promote sustainability options that students could easily undertake in their daily lives and further educate residents about the other sustainability initiatives available to them here on campus.
The green room contains multpile infomarational signs that touch on various areas of sustainability such as energy conservation, waste reduction, and greenhouse gas reduction. These items included in the checklist were compiled based off of the recommendations of several sources such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and the University of Massachusetts Amherst Green Office Program. There are several universities and colleges around the country who also support the model green residence hall room and have received STARS recognition including Duke University and Davidson College.
These green room materials represent relatively low cost and easy to implement items so that students on campus can take full advantage of sustainable opportunities available to them.
