On December 21, the winter solstice, the Sun is seen to rise over the stones in the Sunwheel.

The sky turns a beautiful shade of pink after the Sun sets below the horizon.


Looking through the West portal toward the East portal. The tall stones in the Sunwheel stand out in the snow in December 2000. This winter has brought the deepest snows in Amherst in 22 years.
