Sport Management

Do you ever wonder what is going on behind the scenes of a major sporting event such as the Summer Olympic Games? Or do you know what the day-to-day tasks are of a general manager of a professional sports team? And what is driving conference realignment in collegiate sports?

As a student participating in the Sport Management Summer Program, you will learn the answers to these questions through lively discussion and hands-on activities. The Sport Management Summer Program is offered by the Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management. Created in 1972, the department, part of the Isenberg School of Management, is the second-oldest of its kind in the world. Widely respected for the breadth and quality of its curriculum and research, the UMass Amherst program has been hailed as a world leader. Graduates go on to careers in the spectator sport industry.

Mark H. McCormack, founder of IMG and author of the book "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School", was an inspiration to the business of sport.  A handshake with Arnold Palmer led to the creation of IMG. It also produced thousands of boxes containing letters, memos and other documents that help explain how the late Mark H. McCormack built the largest sports management company in the world.  His vast archives are now housed at the Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management in the Isenberg School of Management to be used for research and education at the Isenberg School of Management.

It is the combination of these archives, along with the expertise and experience within the Isenberg School of Management and the Mark H. McCormack Sport Management Department, the foundation of the Summer Program will be based.

Our introduction into the business of sport will promote critical thinking and understanding of issues related to sport. Areas of concentration include:

  • Historical analysis of sport as a social structure globally.
  • Sport management policy associated with global sporting events.
  • Channels for communication within the sport industry.
  • Research methodologies utilized in marketing research and most commonly practiced in sport marketing settings.

The Sport Management Summer Program will introduce you to the profession and start you on the road to success in the field. Our Summer Program includes classroom lectures and visits to area sport venues (such as the Basketball Hall of Fame) for on-site learning experiences.
