UMass Amherst Summer College provides an excellent opportunity for international students to immerse themselves in the American culture and improve English language skills, while learning one subject in depth and previewing the American university system.
Each year, UMass Amherst welcomes students from around the world who seek a university experience in the United States. Our students experience college life, make new friends and challenge themselves with academics.
Once you have chosen a ‘Course Intensive’ to attend, submitted an application and been admitted to the program you will find information here that will help you in regards to visa requirements and preparing for your time with us on campus.
Students wishing to apply for the Academic Foundations for Non-Native English Speakers intensive or College Bridge should be at the intermediate level (IBT of 60 or above) with at least a score of 15 in spoken and written English.
International students may provide an internet-based TOEFL (iBT) or computer-based TOEFL scores and request ETS to send their scores to Summercollege@provost.umass.edu
For students wishing to apply to any other two week course intensive, we strongly recommend they have a minimum 80 or higher on the iBT TOEFL.
Applicants who have not taken the TOEFL will be asked to participate in an in-person interview or on-line interview. China-based candidates can arrange for a Video recorded interview with Initialview. Candidates from other countries will have to arrange for an on-line interview conducted over Skype by contacting Summercollege@provost.umass.edu or call 001-413-577-2112.
