Want to save some money $$$$ on next month’s utility bills?
Follow these five simple steps to help your apartment go green this winter.
Your bank account, and the planet, will thank you!
1. Unplug all electronic devices that aren’t in use.
Leaving devices & chargers plugged in the wall still sucks up electricity, even when you're not using them. 40% of energy used to power electronics is consumed when the appliances are turned off. Simply unplug everything not in use and drastically reduce your electric bill!
2. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth.
We waste gallons of water leaving the tap running for only a few minutes. Just turn off the tap to avoid the cost of wasted water!
3. Set your thermostat to an appropriate temperature.
For every degree you lower your apartment’s temperature during winter, subtract about 5% from your bill. Also, be sure to set your thermostat to a lower temperature at night; you’re warm sleeping under blankets anyway.
4. Replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLS.
Lighting accounts for 5% of the average apartment’s electricity bill, so you can save quite a lot over the course of the year by replacing your bulbs. CFLs pay for themselves in less than a year with energy savings, and last way longer than the older bulbs. Don’t forget to turn off lights when you leave the room to save even more electricity.
5. Run full loads of clothes and dishes.
Most of the energy used by washers is to heat space and water, so running smaller loads wastes both energy and water. Make sure each load is full to reduce that cost. You can air dry your clothes for added energy savings!
By making these small changes, you can SAVE CASH every month, and feel good that you’re helping the environment!
Bonus Tip: don’t forget to Recycle, recycle, recycle! Bring returnable cans or bottles to your local grocery or liquor store. You get a sweet refund in Massachusetts for each item you return!
