STRING DAY is a day devoted to string playing. The day begins at 9am and ends at 3.15pm with raffle prizes.
After a brief performance in the morning by UMass' graduate string quartet, participants of Opus 2 and 3 will have a choice of attending various clinics including a Masterclass, Mock Auditions, African Drumming and Learn how to Play the Irish Fiddle.
The Masterclass led by Professor Astrid Schween will be in Bezanson Recital Hall and limited to the first 4 to sign up/email firstname.lastname@example.org. The mock auditions led by Professor Elizabeth Chang will be limited to the first 5 to sign up/email email@example.com. Our African Drumming Session with Professor Faith Conant to the first 15, and our Irish Fiddling with Brittany Ware to all instruments - not just the "fiddle".
Phil Rush from our sponsor Carriage House Violins will then give a clinic of How to Shop for your Dream Instrument. The clinic will showcase 10-20 instruments and bows demonstrated by faculty and UMass students.
Opus 4 - Junior will rehearse in the morning at 10am and then move to African Drumming at 11. Following lunch, they will have the opportunity to learn a tune or two in the style Irish Fiddling!
Current UMass students are heavily involved in STRING DAY and they will be sitting alongside each STRING DAY participant in chamber music readings, Opus 2, and leading the sectionals and sitting with participants in Opus 3 and Opus 4.
Parents are welcome to attend the 2.15pm free performance.
