12th Annual STRING DAY will be held in the
Fall of 2017. The exact date is to be determined. Please stay tuned.
UMass Amherst is proud to bring you STRING DAY 2017 in the fall - date TBD. For the past 11 years, the string department has invited the New England string playing community to the UMass campus to experience and work with both faculty and current string students for a fun filled day of music making. String players of all ages are welcome to participate and you can find more information under the description page and the music links page.
As an individual participant, you will have the opportunity to work closely with current UMass string students and faculty: Elizabeth Chang, violin; Ed Arron, cello; Sal Macchia, bass; and Kathryn Lockwood, viola. Participants can work on solo, chamber music and chamber orchestra repertoire. There are also other classes like African drumming, Irish fiddling or Alexander technique. In 2016, our event sponsor, Carriage House Violins, presented an educational session on how to choose an instrument: Finding Your Voice: How to Shop for the Instrument of Your Dreams
Please see Schedule for more description about these events and go to Music Links Page to view descriptions about the 3 levels of Opus Orchestras and see what is appropriate for you. Keep in mind, that these music links are from the 2016 event and have not been updated to include the Fall of 2017.
2017 will see a new beginning with the addition of "STRING DAY for HS Orchestras". A newly formatted event for high school string Orchestras that provides an exciting venue for invited high school string orchestras to perform on the UMass Amherst campus as well as participate in sessions, sectionals and coachings with our string faculty.
"STRING DAY for HS Orchestras" will focus on how to prepare the young aspiring string player for a career in music. This will include the opportunity to participate in a masterclass, a chamber music competition and an opportunity for seniors to audition at UMass Amherst.
The day will culminate in a final performance by all STRING DAY participants to which parents and the public are invited.
Please join us in the fall of 2017.
