How to become a STPEC major

STPEC welcomes inquiries from students already enrolled at the University of Massachusetts as well as from entering students and from potential transfer students at other universities. For more information, contact:

Matriculated UMass Amherst students: Students who are already enrolled at UMass Amherst and wish to join the major should first come to the STPEC Program Office in E-27A for an initial meeting with a STPEC advisor. If, after that meeting, they are convinced that STPEC is the right major for them, they should sign up for a New Student Meeting. New Student Meetings are generally held twice a semester. You will meet with STPEC’s Associate Director, Graciela Monteagudo, and several current STPEC students, who will welcome you to STPEC and answer any remaining questions you may have.

UMass Amherst applicants (first-year students and transfers): Students may indicate on their university applications that they wish to be accepted as a STPEC major. Students may also change into the STPEC Program during their initial summer advising sessions.

  • First-year students are strongly encouraged to meet with a STPEC Program advisor no later than the end of October during their first semester at UMass Amherst.
  • Transfer students are strongly encouraged to meet with a STPEC Program advisor during the summer transfer advising sessions.

STPEC first-year and transfer students who enter the university declared as STPEC majors are expected to sign up for a New Student Meeting during their first semester at the university.

To register for a new student meeting time please stop by the STPEC Program Office.
