Prospective Students: Majors
Arboriculture and Community Forest Management
Arboriculture, or Urban Forestry, is the care of trees and shrubs in community settings. This major successfully prepares professionals with the technical, business, and personnel management skills needed for work in park management, community forestry and the tree care industry.
Equine Industries
Students learn the scientific and practical approaches of the management, care, and breeding of horses. Emphasis is placed on developing and understanding the business and financial aspects of the industry. Students may also take courses in dressage and hunt seat equitation, instructor certification, and training of young horses.
Fruit and Vegetable Crops
Students acquire a basic knowledge of both plant and soil sciences while also gaining more specialized training in techniques of production and management of tree fruits, small fruits, and vegetable crops. This major also offers a degree of flexibility in designing a personal program of study.
Horticulture
Four concentrations are offered. Floriculture Crop Production is oriented toward greenhouse crop production on bedding plants and perennial flowers. General Horticulture affords students the opportunity to develop their own curriculum in horticulture. Students in the Management of Woody Plants concentration can apply their skills in production nurseries and garden centers. Retail Floral Design prepares students for careers in floral design and marketing of floral products.
Landscape Contracting
Students learn to organize and execute the construction of landscapes on private, commercial and public properties. A strong horticultural foundation is used to support the construction and design portions of the curriculum. Students learn in a rigorous lecture and laboratory environment to prepare them for this most rapidly growing area of the green industry.
Turfgrass Management
Through such courses as turfgrass management, weed identification, irrigation, entomology, plant pathology, and business management, students are provided with the technical training necessary to meet the challenges in the dynamic turf care industry. The skills acquired can be applied to the management of athletic fields, parks, home lawns, and golf courses.
